Cyprus gets ever closer to Schengen

Cyprus Schengen accession has entered a decisive stage as a team of around 25 European Commission evaluators carries out final checks on the island. The delegation includes experts from several EU member states, police officials, and representatives from Frontex.

The evaluators aim to confirm whether Cyprus has met all requirements under the Schengen acquis. Their work focuses on security readiness, institutional capacity, and compliance with EU standards.

EU Team Conducts Final Security and Migration Checks

The team is reviewing operational policing systems and internal security procedures. Officials are also examining how authorities handle personal data protection and safeguard human rights. These areas form a core part of the Schengen evaluation process.

During the visit, the evaluators assessed procedures within the Deputy Ministry of Migration. They focused on asylum management, border controls, and return procedures for foreign nationals. These systems play a key role in maintaining secure external borders.

The delegation also met with independent state authorities. These included the Office of the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection and the Office of the Commissioner for Administration and Human Rights. The meetings aimed to verify compliance with EU rules on transparency, governance, and fundamental rights.

The mission returned to Cyprus on Tuesday and continued its work on Wednesday. Inspectors carried out specialised checks related to return operations and coordination between services. Their findings will contribute to the European Commission’s final assessment.

Cyprus’ progress forms part of its wider alignment with EU requirements and obligations, linked to its broader integration within the European Union.
