Larnaca Salt Lake Park moves forward after 15 years as €2.6m project wins architectural competition

Larnaca Salt Lake environmental centre project moves forward

A €2.6 million Environmental Information Centre at Larnaca Salt Lake Park is set to proceed after being frozen for 15 years. The project gained new momentum after an architectural competition attracted 22 proposals, with a winning team now selected.

The centre will act as a hub for information, research, and visitor learning focused on Cyprus’s most important wetland.

What will be built at Salt Lake Park?

The overall project covers more than 40,000 square metres. Existing buildings on the site from a former leper colony will be demolished to make way for the development.

The Environmental Information Centre and its immediate surrounding area will span around 15,000 square metres, designed to highlight the protected area’s ecological and environmental identity.

Winning architects announced by Larnaca Municipality

Larnaca Municipality announced the jury’s results and awarded first prize to a team of five architects:

  • Charis Aristodimou
  • Konstantinos Kelpis
  • Marios Kyriakou
  • Louis Loizou
  • Yiotis Tsangaris

What the Environmental Information Centre will include

Plans for the building include visitor services, education spaces, and facilities aimed at both locals and tourists. The centre is expected to feature:

  • Shop and ticket office
  • Screening and lecture hall
  • Environmental education room
  • Exhibition hall
  • Café with outdoor dining

Exhibits will present ecological, environmental, and cultural aspects of the area, including the Kamares aqueduct.

Education, birdwatching, and access to the salt lake path

Educational programmes are planned for visitor groups, supporting learning and study linked to the wetland’s importance.

The remaining project area will be developed under strict environmental conditions set out in the competition terms, with spaces intended for:

  • Educational and recreational use
  • Birdwatching
  • Improved access to the salt lake path

What happens next (permits and timeline)

The next step is securing the required permits before the project goes out to tender for construction. Work is expected to start within the next year, with Larnaca Municipality acting as the contracting authority.
