Larnaca Municipality and the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) are actively preparing for the launch of the new School of Marine Sciences, Technology, and Sustainable Development, set to open in September 2027 near the old Larnaca airport. The €16.4 million project includes constructing a 4,500 m² sustainable facility featuring classrooms, labs, offices, and more. The university’s Senate and Council have approved the project, and Larnaca is aiming to secure permits by July 2025 and begin construction by early 2026, with an 18-month build timeline.

If construction is delayed, alternative facilities will be used. The school will start with two departments—Marine Biology and Technology, and Sustainable Development—and eventually offer graduate and doctoral programs, aiming to attract around 450 students. Staffing is expected to begin in 2026, pending legal and governmental approvals. Student housing remains a key issue under discussion. Financial projections show the school will be economically viable, with a ten-year revenue estimate of €55.2 million against €54.2 million in expenses.
